The Alabama Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) Program

The Alabama Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) Program is funded by the National Science Foundation (HRD-2308715). This project, entitled Louis Stokes Renewal STEM Pathways and Research Alliance: Alabama LSAMP builds on  Alabama LSAMP: Sustainability of Best Practices for STEM Education and Research, is designed with the overall goal to implement and study innovative, evidence-based, sustainable best practices in STEM education and research experiences for undergraduates designed to increase the quality and quantity of underrepresented minority students by enhancing the STEM educational experience.

The University of Alabama in Huntsville Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation Program (LSAMP) Summer Bridge Program

The LSAMP program is aimed at increasing the quality and quantity of students successfully completing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) baccalaureate degree programs, and increasing the number of students interested in, academically qualified for and matriculated into programs of graduate study. LSAMP supports sustained and comprehensive approaches that facilitate achievement of the long-term goal of increasing the number of students who earn doctorates in STEM fields, particularly those from populations underrepresented in STEM fields.

DID YOU KNOW?

Statistics have consistently shown that students, who attend summer bridge programs complete more units, achieve higher grade point averages, have lower drop-out rates, and higher graduation rates than similar students who do not attend such programs. After completing these programs, students are more confident and self-assured.

*The National Science Foundation defines "underrepresented minority" as African-American/Black, Hispanic/Latinx, Native American, Alaska Native, or Pacific Islander (includes Filipino).

PURPOSE:

The two week Summer Bridge program is open to students who are graduating from high school in May 2024 or transferring in to UAH for Fall 2024. The Summer Bridge program is designed to assist underrepresented minority students in making a smooth and successful transition to UAH and the community. This is an excellent opportunity for new students to strengthen their academic skills, develop a peer support network and to familiarize themselves with the campus and its resources. This program compliments the University’s general new student orientation program by introducing Bridge students to specific faculty, staff, students and other resources in and around campus. Participants will be provided with invaluable information on specific campus services, programs and local resources aimed at enhancing a student’s transition to campus and community life. This will be accomplished while having a memorable  time building relationships.
